Ideal Body Weight (IBW) is a clinical estimate — not a personal goal — used by healthcare providers for tasks like medication dosing and nutritional assessments. It gives a single reference weight based only on height and biological sex.
Because IBW doesn't account for muscle mass, frame size, or body composition, most people's healthy weight actually spans a range around it rather than one exact number.
This calculator uses the Devine formula, the most widely used IBW equation in clinical settings. It starts from a base weight at 5 feet tall and adds a fixed amount for every inch above that.
Formula (Devine)
Men: 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft
Women: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft
Example: Woman, 5’5" → 45.5 + 2.3 × 5 ≈ 57 kg (≈ 126 lb)
